Intro to Medicare
Medicare can feel complicated at first, but once you understand how the pieces fit together, the decisions become much clearer.

Below you’ll find short videos and simple explanations that walk through each part of Medicare at your own pace — enrollment, Part A, Part B, Part D, Supplements, Advantage, and how they compare.

Take your time, move through each section as you like, and when your questions start to form, you’ll already be ahead of most people entering Medicare for the first time.
Enrollment: When You Need to
Sign Up
Medicare enrollment depends on your situation:
-
If you’re already drawing Social Security at 65, Medicare usually enrolls you automatically.
-
If you’re still working and covered by employer insurance, you may be able to delay Part B without penalty.
-
If you’re not drawing Social Security, you may need to enroll manually through SSA.gov.
Enrollment timelines in plain English:
-
IEP: Your 7-month Initial Enrollment Period around your 65th birthday.
-
SEP: A Special Enrollment Period if you’re working past 65 with employer coverage.
-
GEP: A January–March window for those who missed earlier timelines.
Medicare Part A
Hospital Coverage
-
Part A covers things like inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing, and hospice.
-
Most people get it premium-free.
-
There is a per-period deductible and 20% cost sharing afterward.
Medicare Part B
Doctor & Outpatient Coverage
-
Part B covers doctor visits, tests, outpatient services, and preventive care.
-
There’s a monthly premium, a small annual deductible, and generally 20% cost sharing after that.
-
This is also where late-enrollment penalties can apply if you don’t have credible employer coverage.
Medicare Part D
Prescription Drug Coverage
-
Part D plans help cover prescription drug costs.
-
Plans vary by carrier, pharmacy network, and medication list.
-
Important 2025 update (brief, educational):
-
The annual out-of-pocket cap is now $2,000, making drug costs more predictable.
Medicare Advantage
A Private Insurance Alternative
-
Medicare Advantage (Part C) replaces Original Medicare with a private insurance plan.
-
Most include drug coverage.
-
You follow the plan’s network and copay structure.
-
Some have extra benefits like dental, vision, hearing, and fitness.
-
That’s it. Neutral, clear, non-salesy.
Medicare Supplements
(Medigap)
-
Medicare Supplements fill in Medicare’s gaps and reduce unexpected medical bills.
-
They work with Original Medicare and have no networks.
-
Plan G is the most commonly selected option.
Which Is Better
Supplements or Advantage?
-
There is no “best” option — only what fits your doctors, medications, and budget.
-
Some people prefer lower premiums and extra benefits (Advantage).
-
Others prefer predictable costs and nationwide flexibility (Supplement).
